Course Details

Nursing staff, Healthcare workers and carers are involved in moving and handling patients on a daily basis and can be easily injured if the correct equipment/method is not used to aid the moving and handling of patients. This one-day programme is designed to train participants how to handle and move patients with the use of certain equipment and recommended best methods/techniques in a manner, which is safe for themselves and their patients.

Objectives
On completion of this one-day course participants will be able to:

  • State the relevant safety legislation
  • Identify risks of working with patients
  • Identify and assess when and which mechanical aids should be utilised in specific circumstances when moving or handling patients
  • Move, Handle and Transfer patients safely
  • Describe the limitations of the spine and methods of lifting/movement which can protect the back
  • Recognise loads which are too heavy or awkward for one or two persons

Course Programme
Theory Session

  • Introduction
  • Implication of the Legislation / Safety Statement
  • Anatomy / Basics of the Musculoskeletal System
  • Good Back care / Fitness
  • Ergonomic Assessments
  • Basic Principles of Safer Handling

Practical Session

  • Inanimate Lifting – Basic Lifts
  • Patient Handling / Moving:
    · Falling or Fallen Patient
    · Turning Patient in bed
    · Moving Patient up in bed
    · Sitting Patient Forward
    · Moving seated patient up in bed
    · Moving Patient from bed
    · Moving seated patient from bed to chair
    · Assisting patient to walk
    · Transfer patient from bed to trolley

English is the language in which training is delivered and participants must have a good command of the English language. If participants wish to bring an interpreter they may do so but prior notice must be given to Nifast.

Who should attend?
Anyone who is handling or moving patients during their working day

Pre-Course Requirements

  • All attendees must have attended Inanimate Handling training in the last 3 years and are working in a healthcare setting
  • All attendees should be 16 years or over and in good health and have a general fitness level.
  • NB Companies will be required to supply equipment for this training course which includes:
    · Wheelchair
    · Hoist
    · Bed or Profiling Bed
    · Nifast will supply maxi-slides/ mini-slides, Banana / Roller Board and Pivoting Disks

Assessment/Certification
Achievement of the objectives of the course will be assessed in two ways:

  • A written paper in the form of an objective multiple choice test
  • A practical assessment

In addition to a written test and full practical assessment, our instructor will monitor candidates throughout the training.
On successful completion of the training, participants will receive a Nifast certificate, which will be valid for 3 years.
