According to current safety regulations there must be a trained and competent person present at all times while road-works are taking place. This FAS approved course fills the legal requirement for this role. The training is mandatory under Reg. 97 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2006.

Who should attend?

All employees/operatives who wish to maintain temporary traffic management systems in place at roadwork`s, in both rural and urban situations, and to understand the risks to their own safety and to that of their colleagues from passing traffic and the need to avoid creating dangers for the general public and road users.

English is the language in which training is delivered and participants must have a good command of the English language. If participants wish to bring an interpreter they may do so but prior notice must be given to Nifast.

Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to train & assess road workers on Health and Safety at Roadwork`s and to train those required to assist the SLG cardholder at roadworks.

On completion of this one-day course participants will be able to:

• List the main sources of legislation relating to roadworks.
• Understand general legal considerations governing Safety, Health and Welfare at Work.
• Understand and explain the traffic layouts set out in "Chapter 8 Road Traffic Signs Manual, Department of the Environment" and the "Guidance for the Control and Management of Traffic at Roadwork`s."
• Discuss the duties of employers and employees ensuring a safe place of work.
• Understand the concept of risk and the necessity for risk assessments.
• Understand the source of authority to stop and direct road traffic.
• Understand the basics of Traffic Management Layouts and Signing Lighting & Guarding.
• Demonstrate the accepted method of operating Radios and "Stop Go" Boards in typical roadwork`s scenarios.
• Install, maintain and remove signs and devices used on roadworks.
• Organise, direct and maintain the safe flow of traffic through roadwork`s, in all areas and with minimum delay to road users.
• Discuss legal requirements for safe operation of plant and equipment involved at roadwork`s.
• Understand the potential hazards involved in any excavation works.
• Deal with materials, delivery, storage and handling.
• Discuss what constitutes an emergency and dealing with emergency situations.
• Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the subject by written examination.

Pre-Course Requirements

Participants must have a valid Safe Pass card before attending this course.

Participants must have a good working knowledge of the English language. Courses can be delivered in languages other than English through prior arrangement with Nifast and where all participants on the same course speak the same language.

Assessment/Certification:

Participants will complete a written assessment.

On successful completion participants will be issued with a FAS CSCS card for Health and Safety at Roadwork`s. The certificate is valid for 5 years.

Participants who successfully complete this course will be trained to protect themselves, their colleagues, and the public at roadworks, gain a greater understanding of the risks involved with roadworks, be motivated to work safely at roadworks and to minimise traffic disruption to road users and the general public.

Please Note:

·All participants must arrive at 8.30 am sharp for course registration.

·Participates who arrive late will unfortunately not be permitted to complete the programme.

• All participants must bring a passport photo of themselves for their CSCS card registration. Also bring your PPS Number and your current Safe Pass card.
• All participants PPS numbers must be supplied to Nifast on the day of the training course

PLEASE NOTE: Signing Lighting and Guarding (SLG) cardholders are not compelled to attend this course.
