Course Details

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is the leading professional association of safety practitioners and is recognised internationally as the standard for the profession. Please also note that many other professional bodies such as the Institute of Engineers in Ireland (IEI) will allow their members gain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points upon successful completion of this course.

This IOSH Certified four-day course is similar to the IOSH Managing Safely Course, but is specifically tailored to reflect the requirements of managing safely in a construction environment. It is based on a risk management approach to health and safety and involves a good balance of lectues, practical examples, group exercises and case studies. All key areas of construction safety management are addressed comprehensively in the various modules. 

Objectives
On completion of this programme participant should be able to:

  • Outline relevant health and safety legislation and specific legislation, codes of practice, guidance notes and know where to find information sources, and where to obtain advice and guidance on compliance
  • Explain how legal duties translate into managerial responsibilities
  • Distinguish between the duties and responsibilities of the employer and employee, client, contractor and sub contractor
  • Be able to verify the competence of contractors and sub-contractors
  • Have an understanding of risk assessment and risk control, including, identifying common and specific hazards relative to the industry
  • Describe the concept of unsafe acts and unsafe conditions
  • Have knowledge of risk rating systems
  • Be able to select workplace precautions relative to the hazards and record results of risk assessments and carry out reviews
  • Know the statutory requirements for reporting and recording of accidents and incidents
  • Distinguish between accidents, incidents and near misses
  • Understand the principles of accident/incident investigation
  • Know the importance of continuous active monitoring
  • Explain the importance of consultation with employees or their representatives
  • Identify training needs

  • Module 1 - Accident/incident/ill-health causation/investigation and avoidance
  • Module 2 - Legislation
  • Module 3 - Risk Assessment and Safety Management
  • Module 4 - Reactive monitoring focusing on aspects of the construction environment
  • Module 5 - Active monitoring
  • Module 6 - Controlling Common workplace hazards
  • Module 7 - Human Factors
  • Module 8 - Safety Management System (this section can be tailored to suit a company`s OHSAS 18001 system)

English is the language in which training is delivered and participants must have a good command of the English language. If participants wish to bring an interpreter they may do so but prior notice must be given to nifast.

This course is ideal for those looking to build their competency and qualifications in construction safety including Site Supervisors, Site Foremen, Site Managers, Project Managers, Contract Managers, Safety Managers, Site Agents, Engineers and Architects. (Please note this course runs one day a week to facilitate the busy nature of the construction industry).
